Contributing barriers to loss to follow up from antenatal care services in villages around Addis Ababa: a qualitative study

Abstract Background Problems during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum are the major contributors to maternal perinatal morbidity mortality. Focused antenatal care is an intervention set provide basic services for pregnant women, reduce mortality related pregnancy. In Ethiopia, there a significant loss follow up from between first fourth visits. The aim of this study explore potential contributing barriers women in villages around Addis Ababa, capital city country. Methods A qualitative research method was used, where 20 in-depth interviews (zonal, woreda health center managers, midwives extension workers were participants) three focus group discussions (mothers who lost up, mothers completed four sessions visits, community volunteers conducted. data analysis software, ATLAS.ti 8, applied. Results Inability deliver essential which occurs primarily due shortage required medical equipment, drugs, other supplies barrier sustainable attendance followed by poor care, respect, receptiveness service providers. Lack cost transport as well partners’ approval support also claimed be part barriers. Community culture pervious experiences sociodemographic factors like age at time pregnancy educational status reported seeking completion services. Conclusions Both demand supply side play role Availing services, closer improving infrastructure, workforce chain system recommended.
